SEOUL, April 1 Asia Pulse - South Korea's exports climbed 12.9 per cent from a year ago in March on high overseas demand for cars, auto parts and semiconductors, a government report said Saturday.
Customs-cleared exports reached a monthly record of US$27.04 billion in March, compared with $23.83 billion the previous month, according to the report by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy.
Exports grew at a double-digit rate for a second month in March. Overseas shipments surged 17.4 per cent in February after a lackluster 3.6 per cent gain in January.
Imports rose 13 per cent to an all-time monthly high of .75 billion in March, resulting in a trade surplus of $1.29 billion.
March's trade surplus was a sharp improvement from records in the two previous months. The nation's trade surplus was in the $400-million range in January and February.
"Monthly exports are continuing to break new ground, despite such unfavorable factors as a strong won and high oil prices," said Na Do-sung, head of the ministry's trade policy bureau.
According to the report, March's strong export performance was bolstered by robust shipments of cars, car parts, semiconductors and general machinery.
