Your brain contains about 100 billion nerve cells. Each nerve cell is capable of processing up to 1,000 messages per second. Your brain demands a constant supply of nutrients and energy to keep up this pace!
These billions of cells form a communication network that transmits information within your brain and between your brain and the rest of your body. Nerve cells use chemical messengers called neurotransmitters to communicate with each other in a carefully orchestrated manner. The neurotransmitter acetylcholine is critical for normal cognitive function, which includes memory, learning, thinking, and other brain skills.

Cognitive Function Slows with Age
Your brain continues to grow until your early 20s. After that, it slowly begins to lose weight. The speed at which your brain performs cognitive skills also tends to decline after you reach age 25. However, the need to stay alert, focused, and productive in your professional and personal life certainly doesn't decline after youth. Each passing day seems to demand that you think faster and perform better.
What can you do to meet these demands? You can take steps to achieve and maintain optimal brain health at any age. These steps include improving your physical, mental, and emotional health (see Brain Maintenance Tips). You can also fuel your brain with special nutrients to support cognitive health. ([dagger])
