CANBERRA, March 31 Asia Pulse - For every attempt Peter Costello makes to play down the tax debate, proponents of change just get louder.
Even with Prime Minister John Howard in Mr Costello's corner, the business sector, the opposition and even traditional coalition supporters are ramping up their demands for change.
It's becoming a stand-off that's causing internal pressures within the government, particularly on the backbench.
The cause of the problem is the way tax dollars are flooding into Canberra at an unprecedented rate.
Part of this is undoubtedly due to the strength of the Australian economy, the fact unemployment is at near 30 year lows, and that companies - particularly mining firms - are enjoying record profits.
But on the other side of the equation is how the money is raised, and what it's spent on.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics this week released its snapshot of taxation across all levels of government.
