The Volkswagen Passat, our top-rated family sedan from 1998 to 2004, was an inviting blend: a fairly fun-to-drive car whose good handling came with comfort, roominess, interior craftsmanship, and a high level of safety. On the other hand, reliability has never been a strong suit. In early 2005, the Honda Accord Hybrid edged out the Passat.
The redesigned 2006 Passat is sold only as a sedan for now; a wagon version is due in the spring of 2006. The sedan comes with a 200-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a powerful 280-hp, 3.6-liter V6. We bought a four-cylinder Passat 2.0T that listed for $27,440 with a six-speed automatic transmission and typical options. Electronic stability control and curtain air bags are standard.
