Whether you're hunting for an MP3 player or slippers, shopping-comparison sites (a.k.a. shopping bots) can save time and money, especially if used wisely. We shopped on the six biggest bots--Froogle, NexTag.com, PriceGrabber.com, Shopping.com, Shopzilla, and Yahoo Shopping--plus newcomer Become.com, for 10 brand-name products. We assessed prices, availability, ease of use, and disclosure of relationships with advertisers. (Note: Yahoo provides our online subscribers with links that let them compare prices at retailers that meet our buyer-protection standards.) We also asked Consumer Reports WebWatch, our grant-funded project seeking to improve Web credibility, to judge the bots' privacy protection.
