Treating isolated systolic hypertension in the elderly may be the single greatest contribution that primary care physicians can make to the nation's health, Dr. Lee A. Green said at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
About two-thirds of all elderly patients have isolated systolic hypertension (ISH), defined as systolic blood pressure of more than 140 mm Hg with normal diastolic blood pressure. Clinical trials have shown that treatment of the disease substantially improves outcomes, mostly by reducing mortality, noted Dr. Green of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
