Azelaic acid cream plus benzoyl peroxide gel is a cost-effective alternative to benzoyl peroxide / erythromycin gel for acne treatment, Dr. Barry Solomon reported in a poster session at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology.
This conclusion emerged from an economic analysis of clinical results seen in a multicenter, physician-masked, randomized trial that included 123 patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris.
The regimens used were azelaic acid 20% cream (Azelex) in combination with benzoyl peroxide 4% or benzoyl peroxide 5% / erythromycin 3% gel applied twice daily for 12 weeks.
