The risk of fetal loss after amniocentesis is elevated in women aged 40 and over and in those with a history of vaginal bleeding in the current pregnancy or repeated fetal loss, a large retrospective study suggests.
Researchers studied 5,030 women who underwent amniocentesis between the 16th and 17th week of pregnancy at one hospital over a 5-year period. These women included 708 with vaginal bleeding earlier in the current pregnancy 298 with a history of at least three first-trimester abortions and/or a second-trimester miscarriage or pregnancy termination, and a control group of 4,024 women without these risk factors (Br. J. Obstet. Gynaecol. 108[10]:1053-56, 2001).
