One of shooting's great mysteries involves the mainspring housing of the Government Model pistol, The one on the original 1911 was flat but when we got to the 1911A1 it became arched. For years you could order a Colt either way. Today everyone's is flat. Now nobody voted on this and there was no grand conspiracy, it just happened and I don't know why. One suggestion is the change was made because it's much easier to machine a flat surface than an arched shape. That's true, but since almost everyone now uses molded plastics the shape doesn't matter at all. One writer commenting on the shape, said if one changed to an arched mainspring housing he would shoot high. Who knew the mainspring housing was connected to the sights?
More than a few shooters complain about the molded housings and want to replace them ...
