Wellington, Nov 8 - A special select committee looks set to carry out a broad review of the constitution and the role of the Treaty of Waitangi, with discussions also likely on whether New Zealand should become a republic.

A separate dialogue on the treaty, which will consider New Zealanders' understanding of it, also looks likely.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Helen Clark would not confirm media reports that an announcement about the review would be made at the Labour Party's annual conference in Auckland this weekend.

He would say only that talks were progressing well and Miss Clark hoped to make an announcement soon.
