Bridgeport Machines, a past winner of a Queen's Awards for Enterprise employed more than 400 people eight years ago.

However, the downturn in the UK manufacturing sector has hit the Leicester company hard.

The remaining 170 staff were told the company's decision yesterday.

Employees leaving the company's factory in Forest Road, New Humberstone, said their feelings were of sadness and inevitability.

One man, who did not want to be named, said: "I've been here 26 years and I've got a family to support.

"I don't think there are many other jobs out there I'd be qualified for.
