Mar. 31--Some call Elwood the "Heart of Huntington" because of its central location within the town, but it can more easily be referred to as a place with heart. "It's a very warm, caring community," said Loretta Hamann, a resident of 33 years and vice president of the Elwood Taxpayers Association. This community's identity is a bit fuzzy because it lacks a post office, fire district and downtown. Elwood - surrounded by East Northport, Greenlawn, Huntington, Commack and Dix Hills - has three ZIP codes and is served by three neighboring fire districts.
