Markel International has appointed Ian Smith as hull and war underwriter within its Marine & Energy division. Mr Smith joins the division to write commercial hull business, yachts and war risks, and will strengthen the underwriting capability of the existing team. He joins Markel International from Royal & Sun Alliance, where he held the position of hull underwriter.
Mr Smith brings with him over 20 years of underwriting experience.
Montpelier Re Holdings has appointed Christopher Harris as chief underwriting and risk officer of Montpelier Reinsurance with immediate effect, subject to the approval of the Bermuda Department of Immigration. Russell Fletcher III, formerly chief underwriting officer, is retiring from the company.
Mr Harris holds a BSc in Mathematics from the University of North Texas, and is a chartered financial analyst (CFA) and a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. He is also a chartered property and casualty underwriter. He joined Montpelier Re from Allianz Risk Transfer, where he was chief actuary, North America.
Previously, he ran the actuarial consulting practice for KPMG Bermuda, and his experience includes both consulting and operational roles in the insurance and reinsurance fields.
Willis Group Holdings has formed a new reinsurance subsidiary in Oslo, Norway (Willis Re Norway AS). The new operation will form an integral part of Willis Re and will be headed up by Erik Roenningen. Mr Roenningen and his team have enormous experience in the region.
