(From Reinsurance)
Current position: Chief executive of electronic trading service RI3K.
Companies worked for: I worked for Young & Rubicam for five years before establishing my own agency, the SMI Group. Publicis subsequently bought this agency in 1997, and I was appointed worldwide president and chief executive officer of Publicis Technology.
Year entered the reinsurance industry: May 2000.
What state was the industry in then?
It was very confused about technology, and especially (of course) about how to deal with the terrible legacy issues. This created an 'open season' for the technology consultants, who have feasted ravenously on the budgets, with little delivery of value. I look at Inreon and Kinnect, especially, and all the money made by companies at the market's expense - good ideas destroyed by greed.
There are signs now that things are changing. Lloyd's understands the issues at last, and its role. The major managing agents are bent on change, and the brokers have made advances. I think the past five or so years have seen more change than people realise. Small steps, adding up to quite some distance travelled. But there's still a lot to do.
