Comets spend part of their lives as inert, nearly dead objects in the cold, empty wastes of space, before swinging around and bursting into life as they come closer to the sun, expanding as they vent gases. That's a good metaphor for the satellite insurance industry - something that is now showing excellent signs of life after a cold and nasty period of time.

For the first time in a while, the industry is gaining capacity as companies start to eye it and consider at least testing the water. Since the start of 2006, at least one new participant has taken a deep breath and jumped in.
