SIR: In his wonderfully evocative article "Imagining Machu Picchu" (January-February 2006), Nicholas Hasluck reiterates the widely held view that the Inca empire fell so suddenly to Pizarro and his few men, because their rule had been weakened by civil war and the Spaniards were better armed. Jared Diamond recently also pinned the explanation on these same factors, and added the awe-inspiring horse.
Local oral lore on the ground in Peru and the detailed accounts of historians often place the main explanation less on these physical causes and more on the Incas' inferior institutions. The communistic Inca rule was harshly repressive; the flayed skins of regime opponents decorated the streets in the capital Cuzco like flags, and their fields were made permanently infertile by loads of salt. An institution that was even more decisive for the implosion of Inca rule was the practice of interning all beautiful girls in closed houses ...
