MARIA BARTIROMO, CNBC ANCHOR: The uproar over journalists being subpoenaed by the Securities and Exchange Commission is escalating even though the SEC now appears to be backing off a bit. The subpoenas are a result of Overstock.com`s allegations that a stock research firm and a hedge fund were conspiring to sink its share price. The SEC was seeking records for any communication between journalists and those companies.
Last night on "MAD MONEY" with Jim Cramer, Herb Greenberg, who, along with Cramer, received a subpoena from the SEC, vigorously defended himself against charges by Overstock president Patrick Byrne of being a crooked reporter.
