MANILA, March 1 Asia Pulse - The Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) has created task force La Nina to implement measures to avert a negative impact on the agricultural sector from continuous rains in some parts of the country.
Agriculture Secretary Domingo F. Panganiban said the mitigating measures recommended by the task force would be presented to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and will form part of operational plans of the government to ease the effects of La Nina.
Panganiban appointed DA Undersecretary for operations Edmund Sana to head the task force La Nina and instructed him to mobilize the departments regional field units in carrying out measures to prevent agricultural losses.
The DA said heavy rains have hit the country which resulted in agricultural losses amounting to P2.2 billion (US$42.4 million) in flood-prone areas.
These affected areas are Eastern Sea Board, Eastern Samar, Southern Leyte, Agusan provinces, Davao Oriental, Eastern-side of Quezon Province and many parts of Luzon.
Panganiban earlier said the unusual occurrence of rains is an advantage for rice but the other way around for corn and other crops.
The DA said more than 100,000 hectares of corn-producing areas nationwide might be affected by the La Nina weather phenomenon.
