SYDNEY, Mar 1 Asia Pulse - Conditions in Australia's manufacturing industry slipped last month after production and employment both weakened driven by large falls in new orders, exports and inventories.
The Australian Industry Group-PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) performance of manufacturing index (PMI) eased 3.5 points to a seasonally adjusted 46.7 points in February, from an adjusted 50.2 in January.
Readings above 50 points indicate that manufacturing is generally expanding, while readings below 50 indicate it is contracting.
The disappointing February result follows readings of over 50 in both January and December, the first consecutive months of expanding activity since mid-2005.
Across manufacturing, sharp falls in new orders, exports and inventories drove a weakening in both production and employment during February, the index found.
New orders fell to the lowest reading since August 2005, while employment fell for the eighth consecutive month.
Input costs also increased at the fastest rate in three months while the level of supplier deliveries was unchanged.
