AS a reader and researcher, I've found Google Book Search to be very useful. It's convenient, saves time, and has more than once steered me to books I might otherwise have missed.

But as a nonfiction book author, I'm less than enthusiastic about the service, for two reasons. First, Google Book Search is using copyrighted material for profit without paying for it. Second, and more upsetting, Google Book Search dissuades its users from buying certain kinds of non-fiction books.

Looking at the first issue, one must ask the question, should Google be paying for the right to display copyrighted material?
