Wellington, Sept 8 - Health policies regarding cannabis should be guided by experience with tobacco, because the long-term effects of regular cannabis smoking are likely to be similar, according to Associate Professor Robin Taylor of the Otago School of Medicine.

In a presentation to the community respiratory educators' workshop earlier this year, he said the constituents of cannabis smoke were not substantially different from those of tobacco smoke, and the risks to the respiratory tract from regular cannabis use were similar to those of tobacco smoking.
