MANATEE COUNTY -- Since he was elected in 1976, Clerk of the Circuit Court R. B. "Chips" Shore has returned for another term seven times without facing opposition.

This time, however, Dan O'Connell -- a former consultant for Shore's office -- wants the $117,499 job.

O'Connell, an independent, is attacking his former employer, saying that Shore has become too insulated in his management style, and is not vigilant enough in keeping information that could be used for identity theft out of records posted on the Internet.
