CITY OF SAN FERNANDO-Business groups here have urged the Manila North Tollways Corp. (MNTC) to implement the 600 to 700 percent increase in toll rates for the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) "on a staggered basis," in order to soften its impact on businesses, motorists and commuters.
Renato Romero, executive vice president of the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PamCham), said that although businessmen in the province accepted the need for MNTC to raise toll rates to recoup its investment, it must be considerate of the riding public.
"That was the first condition Pampanga businessmen asked of the MNTC. They also want toll discounts for regular users of the expressway," Romero said.
The militant Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Gitnang Luson (Bayan-GL), however, said the toll fee hike was "absolutely unfair" to the public.
