MENTION the word "sports" and to most Filipinos the first thing that comes to mind is basketball. This American invention is practically a year-round affair in our country.
There is always a basketball tournament going on in Metro Manila and other urban centers. If it's not Philippine Basketball Association season, it's the games of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (the most popular basketball contest), the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Philippine Basketball League, or what have you.
It is no surprise therefore that basketball takes much of the sports section of the major newspapers and TV newscasts. Some Filipinos do not seem to have enough of this "big men's" game.
A reader, Joel Antonio of Calamba City, thinks the sports section of the Inquirer leaves much to be desired in terms of coverage of other sports events. Referring to the newspaper's earlier announcement that improvements will be made in certain sections, he noted the omission of the Sports page from that list.
He wrote: "I've already suggested this before that there should be more and constant news devoted to soccer (e.g., the ongoing eliminations in Europe for the World Cup 2006 and the Premiership and Championship leagues) and other well-known global games, such as rugby.
