MENTION El Nido and one imagines beautiful beaches, blue skies and waters, fascinating cliffs and islands. El Nido is the site for one's dream vacation. No wonder, then, that my house guests, the people from Vogue Magazine (Spain), wanted to visit the resort.
Arriving in El Nido, the Vogue team (Javier, Juan, Alberto and Yolanda) did all the expected things involving sand, sea and surf. Then our gracious host, Leigh Perez, asked if the Spanish journalists were interested in seeing the pi[currency]a project of the El Nido Foundation.
The response was an enthusiastic yes. It seems the fame of our delicate fabrics has truly reached distant shores. In fact, Yolanda had earlier tried to set up a meeting with the writer of the book on pi[currency]a, Lourdes Montinola. She was overjoyed at the chance to become better acquainted with the cloth.
Yes, the El Nido management does not just run a resort. It is also involved in several socioeconomic development projects through a foundation first established by Carlos Soriano decades ago.
A three-pronged approach to these projects was identified:
