TO SEE for itself if military justice was "real or a myth," the Integrated Bar of the Philippines has asked the defense department to allow it to observe the trial of Maj. Gen. Carlos Garcia.
In a letter to Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz Jr. on Tuesday, IBP national president Jose Anselmo Cadiz requested that the IBP be accorded "official observer status" in Garcia's court-martial.
"How this case is conducted will prove whether justice in the military is real or a myth. In the end, a fair, speedy process and impartial decision will help keep our people's faith in our military justice," Cadiz said.
He said the close monitoring of the court martial proceedings would help "ensure that there is neither whitewashing in favor of the accused nor railroading of the case against the accused."
Cadiz said a group of up to 10 lawyers, led by IBP executive vice president Leonard de Vera, would observe the trial and report to the IBP Board of Governors.
