WHAT KILLS Filipinos?
What killed the person you loved at whose grave you are lighting a candle or laying a sprig of roses today?
Dr. Omar Arabia II, a known integrative medicine practitioner "of last resort" for cancer patients the past two decades, says that while the number of communicable diseases in the country has gone down, that of "lifestyle" diseases has soared.
Cancer has risen up the death ladder, occupying third position on the causes of death in the Philippines since 1999-a big jump from its No. 7 slot in 1968.
Except for accidents, what brings Filipinos to their graves are chronic diseases attributed to lifestyle, experts say. Which only means that they need not have died so soon.
