THE PHILIPPINES will import close to one million metric tons of rice in 2005 at an estimated value of P12.6 billion due to insufficient domestic production of palay.
This was disclosed by Rep. Rolando Andaya Jr. (LP, Camarines Sur), chair of the House appropriations committee, following a hearing last week on the proposed budget of the Department of Agriculture for next year.
"Swelling population and static hectarage of rice lands have conspired to make us partially dependent on rice imports," Andaya said.
