IN A few days, Americans will go to the polls to elect a President. The outlook and persuasion of American presidents, and even those aspiring to be US presidents, had, on most occasions, affected the course of Philippine history. Today, the incumbent and his challenger have touched Filipinos in a personal way.
Fight against terrorism
President George W. Bush has lavished unabashed praise and support for the Philippines as a worthy partner in the war on terrorism. Our country's special place in Washington's heart was underlined when President Macapagal-Arroyo was warmly welcomed on a lavish US state visit, an honor reserved only for a few heads of state.
Against the advice of his security officials, Bush also insisted on coming over, if only for eight hours, to underscore his appreciation of GMA's immediate declaration of support for the US after 9/11 and, later, her sending a humanitarian contingent to Iraq.
