BAGUIO CITY-The city's risque souvenirs, like the man-in-the-barrel and the wooden penis ashtrays, may soon be a thing of the past if the city council has its way.
Councilor Elmer Datuin called for the ban on the carving of these souvenir items and wanted those still selling them to be penalized.
Datuin said the ban is in line with the program pushing Baguio as a "Character City."
He said his resolution was spurred by an American tourist's comment that Baguio has become a "sin city" because of these items.
"The woodcarvings are not a reflection of our culture and tradition as we have other more appropriate attractions to offer our tourists," Datuin said.
Sellers were peeved at the idea while artists and other residents were amused.
