THE PHILIPPINES got another two-under-par 70 from Juvic Pagunsan yesterday and climbed to a share of 23rd place after 54 holes of the World Amateur Golf Team championships in Puerto Rico.
Pagunsan pieced together nines of 36-34 at the tougher River course of the Rio Mar complex in Rio Grande to cushion the 74 of Artemio Murakami as the Filipinos returned a modest even-par 144 for the day.
The team's third man, Michael Bibat, continued to struggle however. Despite the ideal conditions, the reigning Singapore Amateur champ could do no better than a three-over-par 75.
The Philippines is in a three-way tie with France and Korea at three-over 435-way off its target of repeating a third place finish achieved twice before, in Malaysia in 2002 and in Hong Kong in 1984.
The United States got a solid 67 from Spencer Levin to pad its lead to nine strokes over Spain with 18 holes left in the biennial chase for the Eisenhower trophy.
