HANOI, Nov 1 Asia Pulse - Ho Chi Minh City is preparing a plan to develop flower and bonsai tree cultivation, considering it a major part of the city's agriculture, in addition to ornamental fish raising.
Flower and bonsai tree farming and ornamental fish breeding only became lucrative businesses over the past decade, but brings in profits a dozen times higher than rice farming and poultry breeding. Each household can earn between VND600 million (US$38,115) and VND1 billion a year from one ha of flowers, while average yearly earnings for a household breeding ornamental fish are between VND80-100 milion.
Currently, the city has 1,400 households enganging in flower farming with 600 hectares under cultivation. These figures represent 2 percent of the city's farming households and 1 percent of the total farming land, respectively.
Concentrated flower-growing zones have formed in the wards of Go Vap, Thu Duc, Binh Chanh and No. 12.
