WHEN Allied Wire and Steel went into receivership in 2002, its collapse caused significant local job losses in South Wales and cost the Port of Cardiff a major source of traffic a huge blow to both the port and to Cardiff Stevedoring.
Two years on, the picture looks more positive now that a Spanish firm has stepped into the breach.
Spanish steel giant Grupo Celsa has taken over ASW's steelworks at Castle ' Tremorfa and has resumed exports of steel through Cardiff.
In August, Associated British Ports announced that it would invest more than GBP500,000 to handle growing volumes of steel and forestry products.
'ASW was an important player in Cardiff, and represented a major loss,' says John Copping, ABP ports director, South Wales.
'But since Grupo Celsa has taken over, it has ramped up the steel volumes that we handle, and is expanding the business.
