Byline: Airline-style system proposed to manage capacity more flexibly, writes Andrew Spurrier in Paris
DEBT-laden Channel tunnel operator Eurotunnel is to adopt low-cost airline-style pricing in a reorganisation of its passenger vehicle and freight shuttle services.
Pricing will vary on the basis of time and date of travel and on annual traffic volume for freight shuttle customers. Capacity will be managed more flexibly in an effort to keep it in line with real demand.
In the freight shuttle sector Eurotunnel said it would give priority to customers who supplied annual and daily volume forecasts. Capacity would be adjusted and prices set on the basis of these forecasts.
The company hopes to increase yield per truck by 8% to 10% next year, saying that its proposals had been well received by 50 leading customers representing 70% of freight shuttle turnover.
In the passenger vehicle sector it said it would adjust capacity to fit demand in target segments and vary prices on the basis of the date of reservation and anticipated load factor on the day or time of travel.
