Anchor's away
IT HAS taken four attempts already, so far without success. But the US Coast Guard is determined to find the anchor from the cutter Barque Eagle , now languishing on the bottom of the St Johns River in Jacksonville after breaking from its chain last summer.
The USCG regards it as something special because it is 70 years old and an original component of a vessel seized from the Germans in World War Two.
The other original anchor was lost in 1967 in Chesapeake Bay.
So concerned are they to find it that they have enlisted the help of the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, which is using side scan sonar for the task.
To add a twist to the tale, the anchor was discovered last week and a buoy was placed to mark the spot.
