MILFORD Haven and Port Talbot are positioning themselves as gateway ports for liquefied natural gas traffic into Britain as the region moves to become a net importer of natural gas.
Two LNG terminals are being developed along the Haven. Dragon LNG, a joint venture between British Gas, Petroplus and Petronas, will convert the existing Petroplus site near Milford Haven into a terminal with an annual capacity of 3.5m tonnes of LNG a year.
And Qatargas, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil is to convert the former Esso refinery near Milford Haven into a terminal to handle up to 7m tonnes of imported LNG a year. Milford Haven Port Authority says the two terminals will handle around 30% of national LNG imports.
