ALTHOUGH Associated British Ports saw steel exports double last year through the ports of Swansea and Newport, Swansea continues its struggle to recover from BP's decision to stop importing and exporting chemicals through South Wales.
However, new business has come from exports of Welsh logs to Finland, under an agreement with Finnish paper giant UPM-Kymmene Ltd to export 'significant volumes' of timber from local forests on 3,000 tonne vessels, says Swansea and Port Talbot deputy port manager, Peter O'Brien.
'We hope that a second company will export Welsh logs out of Swansea in the next few months, and this will boost our volumes in 2005,' Mr O'Brien says.
