PORT Talbot increased its imports of iron ore and coal by 3m tonnes to 8m tonnes in 2003, after Corus resumed its steel production in Llanwern and Port Talbot.
Corus is importing steel slabs for processing at Llanwern, and ABP estimates that volumes of imported iron ore and coal could rise to as much as ten million tonnes in the current financial year.
However, the port is also pursuing third party business, targeting owners of capesize vessels, as one of just three UK ports deep enough to handle the largest tankers and bulk carriers.
