MILFORD Haven Port Authority expects traffic to increase by 4% this year, driven by growing numbers serving the Total and ChevronTexaco oil refineries in the Haven estuary. It handled 48.2m tonnes of traffic in 2003.
ChevronTexaco has started to import specialist acidic crude from West Africa, creating a long-term flow of niche business.
Hydrocarbons are set to drive traffic growth through Milford Haven to the end of the decade, with two liquefied natural gas terminals, Dragon LNG and South Hook, due to start operation in 2007, boosting Haven traffic by 10%.
The authority produced a traffic forecast study earlier this year which suggested that Milford Haven could accommodate an immediate 25% increase in traffic and a high water increase to 50% without affecting existing business.
