UK transport union RMT has warned of a 48-hour strike by 1,300 engineering and groundstaff at railfreight operator EWS from Saturday November 6.

The RMT says that the walk-out will go ahead if the company 'fails to make progress in resolving the dispute over jobs, working hours and conditions'.

Strike action planned for last weekend, October 30 and 31, was suspended to allow talks through the industrial dispute conciliation service, Acas.

A ban on overtime, rest-day working and higher-grade duties, in operation since October 26, remains in place.

'The company has refused to give us the guarantees we are seeking on engineering and groundstaff jobs and conditions,' RMT general secretary Bob Crow said. 'They have also refused to set up a joint working party on team-leader issues, even though we are the biggest union.
