FRIDAY was a night of happy insomnia for the proud parents of one of Australian film's hottest talents, Cate Shortland.
Somersault, a film written and directed by the former Duffy resident and Stirling College student, enjoyed phenomenal success at this year's Australian Film Institute awards, winning a record 13 awards.
And yesterday the good news kept rolling in. The makers of the low-budget film are set to capitalise on its unprecedented success with distribution deals in Europe and North America, and extra screenings at home.
Producer Anthony Anderson said Somersault had now been sold to 20 countries around the world and would open in Britain and France in February.
Shortland's parents Bette and Doug Shortland, who still live in Duffy, received the good news late on Friday night via a couple of excited phone calls.
''Cate's older sister Anne phoned from Melbourne earlier in the night,'' Mrs Shortland said yesterday. ''We were thinking of going off to bed, but Cate rang at midnight and told us everything. She was elated and very, very happy. She said, 'I'm starving, I'm going off to eat ...
