CHARRED metal and brick buildings, blackened wood and shattered glass still dot the top of Mt Stromlo, a reminder of the inferno that engulfed the observatory in January 2003.

But the mood yesterday was one of celebration, as the observatory reopened to the public, and the only smell of smoke was that coming from the barbecue.

It was a homecoming of sorts for a certain gnome. When fire swept the observatory, the gnome had been inside the dome, and had been for about 20 years. Astronomer Vince Ford said, ''He used to pop up on desks, in the library, on telescopes.'' The little grey man, whose brightly coloured paint was lost in the fire, was spotted standing on a patch of dirt by visitor Georgina Doyle, and he was swiftly reinstated in one of the dome's alcoves.
