The UK's BP, one of the top foreign oil and gas investors in Vietnam, has invested $657 million in the country since its began operating in Vietnam in 1989, according to State media.

In the 1990s, BP in cooperation with the Indian State Oil & Gas Company (ONGC) and the Norwegian national oil company (Statoil) conducted an exploration program to probe for oil and gas resources in the Nam Con Son Basin, 370 km offshore southeast Vung Tau coastline.

In 1992, the Lan Tay and Lan Do gas fields were discovered in Block 06.1 of the Nam Con Son Basin with a total reserve of 58 billion cubic meters. The newly-discovered gas fields, …
