The Rivers State Government Embarks On Disarmament And Peace Process
The meeting between Dokubo Asari and Peter Odili, Rivers State Governor at Government House, Port Harcourt, at about 8 p.m Tuesday, 12 October, came to many people as a surprise. Asari is leader of Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, a group that has turned the heat on the Rivers State Government.
At the peak of the rebellion, the warlord had vowed in an exclusive interview with TheNEWS that he would never meet with Odili. He alleged that the State Chief Executive had always wanted him dead.
Our sources hinted that the meeting was facilitated by two Ijaw elder statesmen. They are the eminent jurist, and retired Justice of the Supreme Court Adolphus Karibo-Whyte and M.T Akobo, a former Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources. Since retirement, Karibo-Whyte has been the Chairman of Rivers State Advisory Council. During the manhaunt for Dokubo, Akobo who is well over 70 years, and with an impaired vision, was arrested by the Police and his house was ransacked.
The reconciliatory meeting between Odili and Dokubo-Asari was part of the desperate search for peace in the State and in the Niger Delta. The meeting was also a follow-up to the cease-fire agreement between Dokubo and Ateke Tom, facilitated by President Olusegun Obasanjo. Since Dokubo Asari and Ateke Tom agreed to cease hostilities between themselves on the one hand, and against the Federal Government on the other, there has been a flurry of activities in the State.
