Imo State Director of State Security Serviecs, Alex Amaechina, Speaks to Uba Aham On the Reason for the Raid On the MASSOB Headquarters

What motivated the 13 October raid in Okwe, Onimo council area of Imo state?

Most of the activities of Uwazurike are illegal, and should no more be overlooked, especially following his 26 August directive to Ndigbo to sit at home. In the MASSOB headquarters at Uwazurike's Okwe village, you see all over the place people in military attires parading themselves as Biafran soldiers. The membership of MASSOB in Imo State alone is over 15,000. They (the members) are predominantly artisans whose ignorance he exploits in his crusade for the dismemberment of Nigeria. He conducts regular meetings of the group wherein he collects various levies from the members. We discovered that the man realizes hundreds of thousands of naira every month through these levies. With this money, he tells them that one government or the other has recognized Biafra, and that Biafra will be realized as soon as he make proclamation to the effect. He goes out of the country to meet Igbos abroad under the umbrella of World Igbo Congress. He tells a fantastic story, and paints very sordid picture of what is happening at home: How, the Federal Government is marginalising the Igbos, how the Igbos are being killed and so on. He tells them that the only solution is for Igbos to flee and secede from Nigeria.

He convinces them and they will contribute money which he carts home.

But it is believed that he uses the money for the administration of MASSOB
