A kidney transplant increases the risk of diabetes, new research shows.
The September issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, a publication of the National Kidney Foundation, contains a report that patients are more likely to develop diabetes for the first time after a kidney transplant.
The report also states that people with pre-existing diabetes appear to benefit more from kidney transplantation when it is offered before they develop kidney failure, suggesting that doctors should provide the option of transplantation to diabetics sooner, rather than later.
