The Food and Drug Administration May 6 denied Barr Pharmaceuticals' application to sell its Plan B emergency contraception pills over the counter, rejecting the recommendation of one of its traditionally influential expert advisory committees.
According to Barr, Plan B, which consists of two high-dose birth control pills, can reduce the risk of pregnancy by 89 percent if taken within 72 hours after intercourse. However, the so-called morning-after pill is most effective if a woman takes it within 24 hours of having sex, and OTC proponents say it can be hard to find a physician and fill a prescription for Plan B within that time frame.
