Determining when it's safe for kids to finally take the field--and what activities are appropriate for specific ages--is a subject many parents struggle with. Experts say a little common sense goes a long way.

"As long as a child is physically and mentally ready, any sport is fine," says Kevin Burke, a psychologist and director of the Sport Psychology Laboratory at Georgia Southern University. "If they can have fun and are able to choose what activities they're interested in, they're ready to play."

As a general rule, kids should start playing sports around age 6. They should avoid contact sports if possible, focusing instead on pastimes such as tennis, softball and baseball. Team-based events are especially recommended for their social nature. Soccer makes an excellent starting point because it is popular among boys and girls.
