Pursuing a service agenda on a Catholic campus.
Teaching, research and community service represent the three prongs of a successful academic career. Yet research seems to be the only one to be valued when it comes to promotion and tenure.
Because Catholic social teaching emphasizes social justice, it seems logical that Catholic schools should wholeheartedly support and reward service. But promotion and tenure committees in religious schools devalue service as much as they do at secular schools.
