In an era that recognizes the importance of women in leadership, we undertook this study to profile women deans of education and identify what they perceive as keys to their survival and success.

Method

We mailed a 17-item questionnaire to all 300 women listed as deans of education at four-year schools in the United States, according to the American Association of Teacher Education. Of the 300, 225 (75%) women completed and returned and completed the surveys. We eliminated the 48 respondents who were not deans of education, leaving 177 participants.

Here is their demographic profile:

- Age: 55% of female deans were between the ages of 46-61. None was younger than 35 and only one was older than 70.

- Ethnicity: 87% were white, 10% African American, 3% Hispanic and only one Asian.
